Jamie Burke (Kindergarten)

Jamie Burke graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with a B.A. in Literature/Writing. She studied Spanish Literature for a year in Granada, Spain at the Universidad de Granada. She then continued on to San Diego State University to receive her CLAD infused Multiple Subject teaching credential. She found learning another language and being immersed in another culture an invaluable experience that she has been able to apply to meet the individual needs of students. She taught kindergarten for two years in Cajon Valley Union School District, where she initiated and helped lead the kindergarten team in the implementation of an educational plan which ensured that each student received individualized, differentiated assignments and small group instruction, making the material being learned meaningful and accessible to every student. Jamie is so excited to be a part of the Phoenix Learning Center community of parents, teachers, and students. She looks forward to providing experiences that lead to the love of learning and ultimately, lifelong learning.

Jamie lives in Mira Mesa with her husband, Rob. She loves to scrapbook, get lost in the magic of a good book, write, and relax on the beach. She is also currently learning to play the guitar!

 

Amanda Landau (Second Grade)

 This will be the sixth year that Amanda Landau will be teaching 2nd grade!  She taught for 5 years in the Los Angeles Unified School District, in an innovative school focusing on curriculum design and rigorous instruction.  Originally from Northern California, Amanda moved to Los Angeles to attend University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), majoring in Sociology and Women’s Studies.  She then stayed on to receive her Masters of Education in Urban Teaching, writing her thesis on building student confidence through Writer’s Workshop.  Amanda feels strongly about positive learning environments where each student is valued equally, and where each student’s strengths are emphasized.  She is so excited to meet all of her amazing students, and witness the achievements, triumphs, and accomplishments they make this year!  She just moved to Carmel Valley with her husband Michael and two cats -- and has already fallen in love with beautiful San Diego.

 

Jonathan Lee (Fourth Grade)

Jonathan Lee graduated from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and minors in Asian History and Education. He enjoyed San Diego so much, he continued on to receive his Master of Education and teaching credential from University of California, San Diego (UCSD). During college, Jonathan participated briefly in ROTC, fire training academy, EMT training, and other para-military type trainings. After graduation, he went on to substitute throughout San Diego County and Poway at various schools working with a diverse student population, various grade levels, and student ability levels. After a year of subbing, Jonathan went on to teach fourth grade in Los Angeles. There he was able to work with a wide variety of ability levels and students of diverse backgrounds. He believes in hard work and the value of doing one’s best at every task, every time. Additionally, working together, cooperating and learning from experience are valuable life skills that he promotes in the classroom.

Jonathan is extremely excited to work at Phoenix Learning Center with the students and families to provide memorable experiences and help foster a love of creativity, learning, and curiosity.

Jonathan currently lives in Mira Mesa. He enjoys snowboarding, surfing, hiking, and backpacking. His favorite channels are the History Channel, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic Channel. He enjoys spending free time volunteering with Boy Scout troops and lending his experience as an Eagle Scout to younger scouts and anyone curious who wants to always “be prepared.”
 

Cheri Campbell (Sixth Grade)

Cheri Campbell has 15 years of teaching experience, the majority of which was spent in Odessa, Texas. For six years she taught in 4th grade classrooms, spent two years in a Kdg-6th grade science lab, and then a year in 7th grade advanced academic studies science. During her last four years in Texas, Cheri taught 1st-6th grade students in a GATE program applying Dr. Sandra Kaplan's methods.  She holds California Multi-Subject and Reading Specialist certifications and several Texas certifications, including a Gifted and Talented Supplemental.  She has attended Demonstration School along with numerous GATE conferences and trainings.

Cheri graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago and received a masters degree in Reading Education from the University of Cincinnati. She is married to Pat and has two grown children, Tiffany and Jason. She returned to California after many years in Texas and is happy to be living so close to the ocean. Her loves are scuba diving, traveling, and scrapbooking.

Nancy Chen Sah(First Grade)

Nancy Sah is originally from Los Angeles, California.  She moved to San Diego to attend the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and graduated with a Masters in Education, CLAD infused Multiple Subject Credential, B.A. in Human Development and a minor in Education Studies. Nancy also holds a GATE Tier 1 certification, which she obtained through San Diego State University (SDSU).  The past two years she has taught first, second and third grade in San Diego school district. While there, Nancy worked with her fellow teachers to provide equitable learning for all students using technology to help differentiate instruction.  This will be Nancy's second year teaching first grade and is very excited to be working at the Phoenix Learning Center!  Nancy firmly believes in providing a positive learning environment where students feel challenged and safe while having fun. She is looking forward to meeting all of her amazing students and cannot wait to see all their academic growth!

Since Nancy will be married this November to her fiancée Brian, she will assume her new last name, Mrs. Sah at the beginning of the year to make it easier on the students.. Nancy is an avid sports fan and loves to watch football and basketball. She is a die hard Lakers fan and can't wait for another great season! On the weekends, you can find her playing flag football and boards games with her friends.
 

Julianne Clark (Third Grade)

Julianne has been teaching for 18 years in grades three through six. The first five years she taught in Murrieta, California, during which time she also earned a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Looking to live in other cultures, she accepted teaching positions at international schools in Istanbul and The Netherlands. Before joining our program,  she taught for seven years in Oceanside in grades three and four, and completed her G.A.T.E. certification. She has attended advance institutes in gifted education at USC with Dr. Sandra Kaplan the last three summers. She moved from Chicago to Solana Beach when she was nine, and later married and raised her two children in Encinitas. She continues to travel and hike, loves yoga, and has started painting classes.

Kathleen Blough (Fifth Grade)

Kathleen Blough obtained her BA from the University of California, Irvine (UCI). She also went through the credentialing program at UCI. She has a Professional Clear Multiple Subject Credential, a Cross Cultural Language and Academic Development certificate, and a Gifted and Talented Education certificate. She has taught grades 3-6, taught in Oceanside for 12 years, and thas been with our program for three years.  She has been in GATE training for 10 years. She has attended advanced Javits institutes for gifted education at USC with Dr. Sandra Kaplan. She has provided teacher training in Advanced Reading Strategies at the California Association for the Gifted (CAG) conference. She was a participating teacher at the Colonial Williamsburg Institute in Virginia. She was honored to receive San Diego County’s GATE teacher of the year and Teacher of the year at Palmquist Elementary School in 2005.

She lives in Carlsbad with her three wonderful boys:  Rob, her loving and patient husband, Tanner, her determined and adorable 11 year old, and Connor, her precocious and huggable 6 year old. She loves to scrapbook in her free time.
